Chair of The Council

At the Annual Meeting of North East Derbyshire District Council, Councillor Gerry Morley was elected as Chair of the Council for the 2024-25 civic year.

Councillor Morley represents the Clay Cross North ward on the Council and is also a member of the Clay Cross Parish Council. During a long career, he has done many different things. He was a Miner in local pits, which he looks back on with great pride.

Chair’s Charity Appeal

The Chair thanked Council for the great honour it had given to him in making him Chair, but also explained that he wanted to use it as an opportunity to help our communities. And in particular those people living in them who are vulnerable, isolated or who are in need following the Cost of Living Crisis.

Instead of raising funds for just one worthy organisation, he felt that it would be better to help a whole range of community groups and initiatives by raising funds for them. He explained to Council that there were a lot of groups did a fantastic job in helping others, but they often had to do so on a shoestring – or even less.

Councillor Morley has decided to donate the special responsibility allowance that he would receive as Chair in order to help these groups. He wants to hit the ground running and to get the money out of the door and to them as soon as possible. Not wait until the end of the year. He then wants to go on and raise money from across the whole of the District to support and make all the difference to those groups who help people throughout the District.
